What it’s like to spend a night at Skånes Djurpark

We have Skånes Djurpark right on our doorstep here in central Skåne and we’re lucky enough to have spent the night there not once but twice, once in the beautiful tents at Camp Oak, by bear mountain, and once in the Wild Lodge cabins that overlook the deer area.

Spending a night at Skånes Djurpark is absolutely my favourite way to experience the park, and something I’d recommend to anyone. Why? Because so many of the animals are so much more active and visible in the evening than they are during the day, plus being able to get up really close (and even feeding some of them) is just so magical.

Read on to find out what it’s like to spend a night at Skånes Djurpark. Please note that both of our visits were a few years ago now, so some details may have changed – we definitely need to go back!

A night at Camp Oak in Skånes Djurpark

We camped overnight at Camp Oak at Skånes Djurpark back in July 2021.

All of the accommodation packages include a two day ticket to the park, so you can really make the most of your time there. We dropped off our luggage by the entrance and went off to enjoy the park for a little while before our evening adventure began.

At the allotted time we headed back to collect our luggage and transport it to our camp for the night. I have to admit that dragging all our bags down and then up the hill – if you’ve already visited the djurpark, you’ll know it’s hilly – was a bit of a slog, even with the trollies they supplied: packing light is recommended! It was all worth it though when we arrived at the camp and were greeted with a drink in the beautiful centre tent.

The centre tent is huge, with a striking antler chandelier, and a variety of toys and books and places to sit. You could also help yourself to soft drinks and marshmallows for roasting over the fire.

After unpacking and making our beds, it was time to cook our dinner over our firepit outside our tent and then set off to see the animals as dusk fell.

We were separated into two groups and led around by a guide, who handed out food (and plastic gloves for hygiene) and told us about the various animals we visited. We had only ever seen the raccoons asleep, so it was fantastic to be able to handfeed them through the bars – and we’d never seen the wolves or the badgers at all!

As night fell we headed back to camp for hot chocolate and marshmallows over the fire.

I have to admit I slept very badly on the thin mattresses in our tent – but it was extremely cool to hear the wolves yowling in the night.

In the morning, after a breakfast buffet, we got to feed the bears their breakfast and explore a little more before the park opened – then headed home for some well-earned rest.

A night at Wild Lodge in Skånes Djurpark

We stayed at the gorgeous safari lodges at Skånes Djurpark in October 2022.

Just like with the Camp Oak accommodation package, the experience includes two days’ entry to the djurpark, and it’s great to be able to explore once the park has closed to the public and everyone else has gone home.

As an old tired lady with numerous aches, I much prefer the Wild Lodge tents to the Camp Oak ones – they are closer to the entrance, so less far to carry your bags, and they boast real beds and your own bathroom and toilet. There’s no central area, like there is at Camp Oak, which was a cosy spot to curl up on a sofa and read before bed, but the tents are fairly spacious and we had a hot drink and played some board games in our tent before setting out for the evening.

You also don’t need to cook your own dinner at Wild Lodges – instead we gathered in the restaurant for a tasty buffet meal. Then it was time to visit the animals. Since this was höstlov rather than sommarlov, it was much darker much earlier, but also very cosy.

Once we’d finished our tour of the animals, we headed back for an ice cream dessert overlooking the deer enclosure. We were also excited to find a delivery on our tent doorstep: paper bags of marshmallows and sticks so we could roast them over the fire pits outside the tents.

In the morning, it was time for breakfast and then another fun day exploring the park.
